The top 2 layers are 'torched' on, which means that the underside is heated with a gas gun, melting the bitumin to a sticky level and applied to a vented layer (which can be seen in the middle picture). The vented layer has perforated holes to prevent the 2nd layer from sticking to the decking entirely and cracking when weather elements cause movement. The vented layer allows for movement without the danger of felt rucking and cracking. A High performance system in usual circumstances will last in excess of 25 years.
